Alone in your room, minding your own business, a quick movement in the corner of your eye suddenly comes into view. You’re sure that it was a shape of a person you just saw. You feel the presence of something you think was once human. Was it just a silhouette? A shadow perhaps? Or maybe a ghost? You think it’s nonentity but think again, is it your keen mind playing tricks on you? Or is it a supernatural entity?

Shadow like beings appearing in dark forms of silhouettes and are supernatural in origin are the Shadow people. Often times mistaken to be ghosts, these beings appear in the corner of people’s eyes, remaining for a moment and sometimes moving between the walls, appearing in mirrors and when we are aware of them, they disappear, they flee and disintegrate into nothingness, moving and toddling through walls before you get a chance to see them clearly.

Also known as Shadow Beings or Shadow Folk, Shadow People are drawn to one person or location for mysterious motives. Their characteristics range from being diffident and playful to downright spiteful and malevolent. The only way to describe it is pure evil. Unusual descriptions of people who came across these beings, in different countries all over the world, have been very daunting. While some people see a shadowy form which is human like, others see formless translucent black splotches and twirling columns of murky smoke.

Shadow People are said to travel extremely rapid and can toddle through solid matter, making them less prone to direct visual contact. They are reported to vanish before having a chance to be seen evidently. People who encounter these creatures come upon the feeling of dread, shock and panic. Some people even reported being attacked and chased by these horrifying shadows. They claim to feel a being in the presence of something that was once amongst us, once human. Substantiation of these creatures appeared before mankind throughout history and therefore unfolding the ultimate essence of pure evil. An increase in reported detection of these beings all around the world are accounted for. More and more people stumble upon these dark shadows of unknown nature.

Shadow people are often times mistaken to be ghosts, but the truth of the matter is they are totally different. Ghosts are said to be ethereal spirits of dead human beings and take on the manifestation and attributes of human beings none of which is familiar to that of the Shadow people. Shadow people do have human-like forms but do not bear similarity to any person, dead or alive. Many records depict Shadow people as having human-like figures, but they are by and large not told to bear a resemblance to the actual persons, alive or departed. Shadow people do not correspond to people in words but they leave feelings of extreme trepidation, shock and panic. Even animals stumble upon these beings. Fear and hostility are the main outcome to these encounters. So the next time you see something at the side of your eye, don’t be surprised if it may just happen to jump right at you and give you the oddest surprise of your life.

I frequently get asked questions about shadows, and how to get rid of them.

Good news, and bad news. The bad news is, wherever there is light, shadows are always going to be there and will always a problem for photographers. The good news is there are a number of really easy solutions to the problem.

Let’s consider, what’s causing the shadow? Well, clearly it’s caused by the light hitting your subject and not landing on the background behind them.

One way to fix the problem of the shadow and not the light landing on the background is, get rid of the background. If there is nothing for the shadow to land on, SHAZAM! No shadow.

Fast fix number one would be – dump the background.

In an outdoor setting. Easy fix. Position your subject of the so there’s nothing behind them.

Unfortunately you can’t remove the walls if you’re shooting indoors. But you can position the subject further away from them. Too many of us tend to shoot people against a wall, like a mug shot – when all we need to do is move them more into the middle of the room. Your shadows will disappear.

Unable to move them far enough into the room? Set up a new light that only hits the backdrop.

Get your subject lit and posed the way you like them and then add a light that strikes the backdrop and not the subject.

Using a “background light” has an additional bonus. By using colored gels, cookies, and scrims – your background becomes a design element within the photograph. You’ll be able to include patterns, shapes and different colors. This way your additional light is not just a shadow removal system but also improves the appearance of your photograph.

How does light work? There’s been much written about the subject, but it’s easiest to think of light like a billiard ball. Light will hit a subject at a certain angle and reflect off at that same angle. This is called the angle of incidence. It’s the same thing as a billiards ball bouncing off the cushion. Shadows on the other hand, don’t have any fancy angles. They are always in direct line with the light. This makes it easy to predict where the shadow will fall and by simply changing the angle of the lights, you can make the shadow fall into an area that won’t show in the final photograph.

Indoors, you can do this by moving around your “studio lights” to get the best angle. If you’re only using an on camera flash, you can bounce the light off the ceiling or a wall. This will change the angle the light is approaching the subject. Outdoors, you can’t change the angle of the sun but, you can change the angle it hits the subject by simply moving the subject.

Sometimes, the problem is the harshness and intensity of the shadow, which is caused by the relative size and strength of the light.

Lower the intensity of your light, and it will also lower the intensity of the shadow. The shadow will still be there but may not be so distracting.

To lower your lights’ intensity… simply move the light further from the subject, while still maintaining the same power settings. Or, by leaving the light in place and reducing the power settings.

You can make your light bigger by using umbrellas, softboxes, and scrims. This will also soften the shadows and make them less distracting.

Umbrellas and softboxes have the same function as a cloud moving between the sun and your subject. They diffuse the light making the light source larger. In the case of a cloud between the sun and the subject, the entire cloud becomes the light source rather than just the tiny little sun. Next time you’re outside, observe some shadows both before and after a cloud passes over. You will see a dramatic difference in the intensity of the shadows.

Anyone can put on a ghillie suit and do a fair job of concealment. Those who pay attention to detail will do a much better job of concealment. You will find that as you pay more attention to detail, a lot more detail appears that needs attention.

The first detail to pay attention to is your ghillie suit itself. It may look great just hanging there empty, but when you insert your body into it, things get distorted and gaps may appear. Make good use of a full length mirror and a good friend to find places that need a little help. Keep some extra thread on hand and fill these places with thread or leaves or rags or whatever is called for. The improvement of your suit should be an ongoing affair. Bulk it up over time by adding more thread and in colors that will enhance its effectiveness.

Once you are semi-satisfied with how it looks in the mirror, take it outside along with the aforementioned friend and a video camera. You can see your shortcomings on the video as you and said friend talk about it over beer and nachos. These tactics will most likely be scoffed at by the hard-core military types since they have been trained to do all this on the fly under somewhat trying conditions. Lesser mortals may take their time and have their friends critique their progress over beer and nachos.

In the field, remember you are trying to imitate a bush. You have to overcome the fact that even with a ghillie suit on, you have protrusions that scream to the world that you are a fearsome two-legged beast. Some ghillie suits are made in one piece that covers from head to feet and therefore conceals your two-leggedness. Other suits are jacket and pants sets and you will have to take the advice your Mother gave your sister. Keep your legs together.

The problem of the head sticking up out of the bush is easily overcome by vegging out the area between the top of your head and the outside of the shoulders.

Another little detail is the shine from your smiling face. Frowning doesn’t help. It still shines. Facepaint and a veil should stop that little worry. Don’t forget the hands at this point.

There are two schools of thought on movement. I will point them out and leave them for beer and nacho discussions. One thought suggests that you imitate the movements of the big cats on a stalk. Quick, short moves with total stillness in between. Another says to imitate the movements of the sloth. Slow, fluid, and continuous. I suggest experimenting and using what works best for you.

One detail you should never forget and be creative in finding answers for. Peter Pan may have lost his shadow, but you are not going to be able to do that. Just be aware that it is always there and learn to work with it. Whenever possible, merge your shadow with another.

All the while ask yourself if you are blending in. Are you the only “green” bush in an area full of brown bushes?

The color doesn’t matter for hunters, but paintballers and other war game folks should pay heed.

Choose your ghillie suit according to the activity you have planned for it. A paintballer is going to need a lot more mobility than a hunter under most circumstances. While a full body poncho is great for a still hunt, it might be overly restrictive to a hyperactive paintball warrior. The warriors will need a jacket and pants set or in some cases, a head and shoulders poncho.

The more you put into your suit, the more you’ll get out of it.
